Museum at Shirali, Bhatkal
July '06 - Dec '08

The construction of the Shri Chitrapur Math Museum will mark the tercentenary of the Math. It is designed to house a collection of antiques dated back to 3rd century AD on a small site in the village of Shirali. The design concept centres on the creation of a large singular space which is divided into several galleries at different levels without loosing visual connection from one another. The Chariot, which is wheeled out on ceremonial occasions, forms the largest object in the collection placed as reference object in the high volume space defining the core of the building. The main entrance and all the galleries maintain a visual connection with the adjacent Math which is the museum's parent institution. A traditional Mangalore tiled roof is used given the high volume monsoon rain and the strong rural context.
